I'm Spilling All The Tea On My Boo Thang
Now I know you've seen this chocolate man with me quite a bit recently and there's definitely a reason for it. I opened up about our relationship a while back in my college love story post, but left it with uncertainty of where we were heading. He lives in a different city...in a different COUNTRY, so we were skeptical that we could make things work.
But somehow, someway here we are...
Three years later we're still at it, making international trips just to be in each other's presence. Given the longevity of this relationship I thought it finally time to formally introduce my boo to you and New York was the perfect time to do so.
When I break down our situation, we work so well because he's everything I'm not. He's the stable and traditional significant other in our relationship and I appreciate him for it. I went to New York with this entire idea mapped out of how we were going to be the cute couple who does one of those Youtube videos where I ask him questions and everyone was going to love it, yada yada yada. But once we were there I swiftly remembered who this amazing man is. After asking him all these questions and trying to make him all cute for the camera, I stopped myself to say that's not who he is.
So allow me to introduce you to Denzel and share a bit of our journey together.
We first met during my sophomore year at Florida International University. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and at the time of our first encounter I was competing in their Miss Black and Gold pageant. He'd just crossed so I walked up to the table and referred to him as a "baby ape".
He asked for my number via Facebook. Yup, he slid into the DMs real quick but it worked in his favor! Keep in mind he had a Bermuda phone at the time so I was texting him like normal until I got my phone bill with extra charges for "international texts". Let's just say I waited until after summer break to text him again because who was paying extra money? Not I.
Our first date wasn't really a "date". We were talking about this in New York, and our first "date" was the simplest and cutest thing a man has ever done for me. I'm genuinely a simple girl, so he did something perfect that made my heart melt. It was the premiere night of the Crazy, Sexy Cool movie and I was on duty as a Residents Assistant which meant I couldn't leave the building all evening. He texted me to do something, but I told him I couldn't leave so he told me to count to three. This man ran across campus and showed up at the door to watch the movie with me. He brought some snacks too! I'm a hopeless romantic so I was basically sold after that.
My favorite thing about him is he keeps me grounded and makes me a better person. It's rare that you'll find someone who not only wants the best for you, but will see to it that you also learn to want the best for yourself. This man has had a HUGE impact on my life and the woman I am today. So him being the stable, level-headed man that he is has truly helped me evolved into the person I am today.
He doesn't like the limelight so when it comes to my blog he still completely and totally supports me. Duh. He's not going to randomly love me blogging about us or vlogging with him in it, but he does support my blog 100%. For the traditional, office man that he is he will still take time to challenge me to map out my entrepreneurial plans, proofread my blogging emails and read my blog posts. Even though he's not on the front end of the camera, he's definitely my number one fan behind the scenes.
Our plans for the future are to continue building empires. We both have so many personal goals, so right now we continue to encourage each other to be the best we can be in our respective fields. I'm sure you were anticipating me talking about marriage and kids and all that jazz. Not yet. We've got a lot to build before we cross those bridges especially since we still live in different countries. But I will tell you we are planning our next trip to somewhere tropical this time, so stay tuned for that!
So that's my boo in a nutshell. He's pretty amazing, right? I know. Even on our worst days together I wouldn't trade him for the world. But enough about us, I'd love to hear about your boo and the journey you've taken together! Leave your boo details in the comments because I'm a sucker for a cute love story.
